Description

French Onion Soup Recipe is a comforting classic made with caramelized yellow onions, rich beef broth, dry red wine, and aromatic bay leaf, topped with toasted baguette slices and melted Gruyere cheese for a warm, flavorful, and satisfying meal.

Ingredients

6 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

4 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 teaspoon sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

8 cups beef broth

1 cup dry red wine

1 bay leaf

1 baguette, sliced

4 ounces Gruyere cheese, shredded

Instructions

Caramelize onions: Melt butter and olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add onions, sugar, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 30-40 minutes, or until onions are deeply golden brown and caramelized.

Add liquids and simmer: Stir in beef broth, red wine, and bay leaf. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.

Prepare bread: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Place baguette slices on a baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes, or until lightly toasted.

Assemble and broil: Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls. Top each bowl with toasted baguette slices and shredded Gruyere cheese.

Broil: Place bowls under broiler for 2-3 minutes, or until cheese is melted and bubbly.

Serve: Serve immediately and enjoy.
