Spider Cookies have quickly become one of my favorite treats to bake, and after making a fresh batch today, I couldn’t wait to share the experience with you. The moment they came out of the oven, the kitchen was filled with the rich, nutty aroma of peanut butter mingling with the sweet hint of brown sugar.

As the Spider Cookies cooled, I piped on glossy chocolate ganache and gently pressed on tiny candy eyeballs to bring the playful spiders to life.
What I love most about these Spider Cookies is how they balance flavor and fun. The peanut butter dough bakes into soft, chewy rounds with just the right amount of sweetness, while the chocolate spiders add a silky richness that makes every bite irresistible.
The combination isn’t just delicious—it feels nostalgic, like the kind of cookie you’d hope to find on a childhood Halloween table.
Why Spider Cookies is the Ideal Recipe
After baking these Spider Cookies, I realized just how much Spider Cookies stand apart from the usual holiday treats. They’re not just another batch of cookies—they’re a memory in the making.
The process itself feels rewarding. Mixing the peanut butter into the dough, I could already imagine the nutty richness that would carry through every bite. When the Spider Cookies emerged from the oven with their golden, crackled tops, I knew they were going to be something special.
The real fun comes in the decorating. Turning each cookie into a tiny spider felt like crafting edible art. I melted the chocolate, whisking it with cream until it turned smooth and glossy, and then carefully piped out the delicate spider legs.
Adding the candy eyes was the final touch, and suddenly, the cookies had personalities of their own—some cute, some mischievous, and all completely irresistible.
Key Ingredients in Spider Cookies Recipe
When I was preparing these Spider Cookies, I noticed how each ingredient played its own role in shaping both the flavor and the fun of the Spider Cookies recipe. Here’s what stood out to me as I worked through the dough and decoration:
Creamy peanut butter – This is the heart of the cookies. As soon as I scooped it into the bowl, I could smell that nutty richness that gives the dough its distinct taste and aroma. It makes the cookies soft, chewy, and satisfying.
Unsalted butter – Beating this together with the sugars and peanut butter gave the dough its creamy, smooth texture. The butter rounds out the flavors, keeping the cookies tender rather than dense.
Granulated and brown sugar – I love the combination of these two. The granulated sugar adds sweetness and a bit of crispness, while the brown sugar brings that hint of caramel depth. Rolling the dough balls in sugar before baking created the crackly, golden tops that make the cookies look bakery-worthy.
Egg and vanilla extract – Simple but essential. The egg binds the dough together, and the vanilla adds that warm, familiar fragrance that makes the cookies taste homemade and comforting.
Flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt – These dry ingredients are the foundation. As I whisked them together, I could already picture how they would give the cookies their light texture and those beautiful little cracks after baking.
Chocolate chips and heavy cream – This was the fun part. Melting the chocolate with cream turned into a rich ganache that I used for the spider bodies and legs. Smooth, glossy, and perfectly pipeable—it made decorating a joy.
Candy eyeballs – I’ll admit, adding these was my favorite step. Pressing them gently into the ganache gave each spider its own personality. Suddenly, the cookies weren’t just cookies—they were little characters ready to surprise and delight.

- 1/2 cup (100 grams) brown sugar
- 1 large egg 50 grams out of shell, room temp
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 cups (188 grams) flour see notes
- 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons granulated sugar for rolling the dough balls in, see notes
For the spiders:
- 1 1/2 cups (256 grams) semi-sweet chocolate chips or chopped semi-sweet chocolate
- 6 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
- 48 candy eyeballs
Instructions
Make the dough
- In a large mixing bowl, using an electric hand mixer at medium speed, beat together the peanut butter, butter, granulated sugar and brown sugar until smooth and creamy. Add the egg and vanilla extract and mix until fully combined.3/4 cup (192 grams) creamy peanut butter,1/2 cup (113 grams) unsalted butter,1/2 cup (100 grams) granulated sugar,1/2 cup (100 grams) brown sugar,1 large egg,1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- In a separate medium mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Gradually stir this dry mixture into the peanut butter mixture. My dough was quite firm and easy to roll into balls. If yours isn’t, wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm enough.1 1/2 cups (188 grams) flour,3/4 teaspoon baking soda,1/2 teaspoon baking powder,1/4 teaspoon salt
- Preheat the oven to 375 °F (190 °C) and line a baking sheet with a piece of parchment paper.
- Place the 3 tbsp of sugar in a small bowl.3 tablespoons granulated sugar
- Shape the dough into twelve (you’ll do the rest later) 1-inch (31-gram) balls and roll them in the granulated sugar.
- Place the dough balls on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 3 inches apart.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 10-11 minutes or until the cookies develop cracks on the surface, and they’ve browned nicely.
- Right after you take them out of the oven, use the bottom of a rounded teaspoon to make an indentation in the center of the cookies for the spider’s body. Don’t press so hard that you break through the cookies.
- Remove to a cooling rack after 10 minutes to let cool completely.
Make the spiders:
- Place the chocolate and cream in a microwave-safe bowl.1 1/2 cups (256 grams) semi-sweet chocolate chips,6 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
- Melt in 30-second increments at half power, stirring after every increment, until melted.
- If it’s too thin to pipe right now, let sit until firm enough to pipe spider legs onto the cookies. Mine was good to go immediately.
- Pipe 8 legs onto the 24 cookies using a small round tip, making sure that the legs start inside of the indentation, and not on top of it.
- Switch to a larger round tip and fill in the indentation with ganache and make the spider body a bit rounded by piping over the top of the indentation. They should look 3D and not flat.
- Add on 2 eyeballs per cookie (if the ganache is still too soft to do that, you may need to wait a bit or toss them into the fridge very briefly, but I had no issue with it).48 candy eyeballs

How to Make Spider Cookies Step-by-Step
When I baked these Spider Cookies, I found the process both simple and surprisingly fun. Here’s exactly how I went about it:
Preparing the dough base – I started by beating together the peanut butter, butter, and both sugars. The mixture turned creamy and smooth, and the aroma was already irresistible. Once I added the egg and vanilla, the dough felt rich and ready for the dry ingredients.
Combining the dry mixture – In another bowl, I whisked together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Slowly adding this to the peanut butter mixture transformed it into a firm, easy-to-handle dough. I loved how it came together without being sticky, making it perfect for rolling.
Shaping and coating the dough balls – With a small scoop, I rolled the dough into one-inch balls, then coated them in granulated sugar. This part felt almost therapeutic, and I knew that sugar crust would bake into a beautiful crackly finish.
Baking the cookies – Once the dough balls were lined up on the tray, I placed them into the preheated oven. About ten minutes later, the cookies had puffed slightly, developed those signature cracks, and filled the kitchen with the warm scent of peanut butter.
Creating the spider’s spot – Right after pulling them out of the oven, I gently pressed the back of a spoon into the center of each cookie. This indentation was where the chocolate ganache would later sit, forming the spider’s body. It was a simple step but made the final decoration so much easier.
Preparing the ganache – While the cookies cooled, I melted semi-sweet chocolate with heavy cream. Stirring it until glossy and smooth, I couldn’t resist tasting a bit—it was rich, silky, and exactly what the spiders needed.
Decorating with spiders – Using a piping bag, I carefully drew out eight thin chocolate legs across each cookie, starting from the indentation. Then I filled the center with more ganache to form the rounded spider body. This was the moment the cookies really started coming to life.
Adding the eyes – Finally, I pressed two candy eyeballs into each spider. It was amazing how quickly a simple cookie turned into something whimsical and festive. Every spider seemed to have its own personality, and that made the whole experience even more enjoyable.

What makes these Spider Cookies so special is the way they blend comfort with creativity. The peanut butter base is soft, chewy, and full of flavor, while the chocolate ganache transforms each cookie into a little edible masterpiece.
As I decorated them, I realized Spider Cookies weren’t just treats—they were conversation starters, the kind of dessert that makes people smile before they even take a bite.

FAQs about Spider Cookies
My cookies are spreading too much. What can be done?
When I noticed a test batch spreading more than I wanted, I chilled the dough for about 30 minutes before baking. This made it firmer and kept the cookies from flattening too much in the oven. If your kitchen is warm, this little step makes all the difference.
Can cookie dough be made ahead of time?
Yes, and I actually prefer it that way sometimes. I’ve prepared the dough a day in advance, wrapped it tightly, and let it rest in the fridge. The flavors deepen slightly, and it’s convenient to bake fresh cookies when you need them.
Can a different type of cookie be used for the base?
Absolutely. While I love the peanut butter base because it pairs so well with chocolate, I’ve also tried a classic sugar cookie base for a lighter flavor. The decorating works just the same, so feel free to adapt it to your taste.
How do I get the candies to stick to the cookies?
When I was decorating, I pressed the candy eyeballs into the ganache while it was still slightly soft. The ganache acts like glue, and once it sets, the eyes stay in place. If the ganache firms up too quickly, just reheat it gently until it’s spreadable again.
Conclusion
After making these Spider Cookies, I realized they’re more than just a sweet treat—they’re a little moment of joy wrapped in chocolate and peanut butter.
From rolling the sugar-coated dough to giving each spider its own personality, the process felt just as rewarding as the first bite. Spider Cookies are playful, delicious, and the kind of recipe that makes any gathering feel special.
